Ring flash lit images seem to be all the rage in today's photographic circles. These units are made for fashion photography but can be used in portraiture if your subject is very thin and your make up artist is familiar with creating depth and dimension with cosmetics. The young lady pictured below saw my ring flash in my camera room last Saturday and asked what it was. I told her it was a "fashion light" for models. She asked if I would use it on her and I said I would, but I doubt she will like the results. I suggested we shoot two images, one with the ring flash (which produces very flat lighting) and another with portrait lighting. I used short lighting to slenderize her face. I will post the ring flash image first, then the short lit image. Note how much thinner her face appears in the short lit image. BOTH of these images were shot with the same camera and lens within a few seconds of each other. Benji P.S. She hated the ring flash lit image.
